How To Stop Poker Tells
Untitled Document

Tells are often a big part of a poker game. Whether done without notice or on purpose to trick opponents, they can often help you read what the other person is thinking, or wants you to believe they are thinking. Most of the time, however, tells are an obvious way for others to know what type of hand you are likely to have. Because of this, it is advisable to try to stop them from occurring.

Below is a list of tips and tricks to help you detect poker tells and body language and will let you know what you should avoid. By recognizing the poker tells of your opponents, you will learn to avoid doing them yourself.

The top poker players in the world know that body language is one of the most important aspects of winning the game. Knowing when one of your opponents is trying to bluff you and steel your chips can sometimes mean the difference between winning and losing. It is important that you understand which tells to avoid in order to successfully pull off your own bluff.

One of the most common tells is acting weak when you are strong, or acting strong when you are weak. For some reason, almost all players will do this at one time or another. The key to avoiding this is to mix it up and remember not to overdo it, so watch for this.

Breathe often. When making a big bluff, or when nervous, people often get caught up in the excitement of the moment and forget to do this. Doing so will give you away.

Eyes on the flop. Often times, when a player has a weak set of cards and you notice they are staring at the flop, they are usually attempting to figure out what outs they may have, or if it is possible for them to make a hand. When you see this occur, it usually indicates they have a weak hand. Try to avoid doing this yourself.

Though it may be impossible to stop every tell in your game, knowing the ones that are most likely to occur and how to avoid them will help you improve your game and how you play your hands. Also knowing when to "tell" on purpose so as to trick your opponents is important. The key is to pay close attention at all times. Try to learn the tells of your opponent and be careful not to pick up on their bad habits. Pay attention to any habits or gestures you might frequently use that could give you away. This could be crucial to your winning or losing the game. Remember, you are playing a game of chance, but increasing your skill can help improve your odds.
